Traditionally, the groomsmen have fun decorating the getaway car during the reception as a final surprise to the bride and groom. In the past, soap or shaving cream was used to write "Just Married" and the back window. Old shoes were tied to the back bumper because leather was thought to ward off evil spirits, and would keep the young couple safe. Sometimes tin cans were also tied to the back of the car, to make noise and call attention to the happy newlyweds.
Now, more couples are renting limousines and are aware that shaving cream might damage the paint and rental companies discourage tying anything to the car. There are many other alternatives now available that won't harm the car in any way. Many online companies offer creatively printed banners such as "Together Forever", "Just Married", and "We've Tied the Knot" printed in white on clear static vinyl. Just peel and cling to the windows or auto body.
Flowers, both fresh and silk, are perhaps the most popular decorations. Silk flowers will endure the elements better as well as heat from the car. Flower garlands that are purchased from the craft store, are easily attached by tucking the ends under the car's trunk lid.
Giant crepe paper streamer rolls (500 feet), may be purchased to decorate the chapel, reception hall and even the getaway car. Tie some streamers to the antenna, the side-view mirrors, the door handles, and make a big bow for the hood. Use the colors of the wedding and vary the lengths of the streamers. Matching balloons can be tied to the outside of the car or used to fill in the inside. The bride and groom will want to take lots of pictures of the "Just Married" car, as well as those who lovingly decorated it.
