Mere mortals like us already consider hiring top-of-the-line New York limousine services for our wedding to be an expensive extravagance.

But when you are an oil magnate or the daughter of one of the worlds richest men, then you would not even think twice about hiring every company that offer prime limousine service in New York to ensure that all your wedding guests arrive to your wedding in style.

Consider the case of Vanisha Mittal and Amit Bhatia for example. When Mittal, daughter of the fifth richest man in the world married Bhatia in 2004, they had 20-page invitations encased in silver boxes made, flew in and housed 1,000 guests in a 5-star hotel in Paris, hired Kylie Minogue to perform at one of the many wedding parties they held and gave away jewel-filled bags as party favors. The wedding, which was held at the Palace of Versailles, is the worlds most expensive wedding and cost the brides father, Lakshmi Mittal, a staggering $60 million.

Ultra expensive weddings such as the Mittal-Bhatia nuptials seemed to be the norm among the richest of the rich. More and more of the worlds billionaires seem to be bent on throwing their children or themselves a celebration worthy of being mentioned not only in the New York Posts Page Six but the respected financial-magazine Forbes as well.

For his equally extravagant but less expensive wedding for example, Russian Andrei Melnichenko and his Yugoslavian beauty queen-wife Aleksandra Kokotovic had a chapel in Russia dismantled then shipped and rebuilt in France (or at least that was what the gossip mills said). And while Mittal had Kylie Minouge, Melnichenkos Cote de Azur-wedding featured performances from not one but two pop superstars: Christina Aguilera and Whitney Houston.

Such outrageous excessiveness is hard for us to fathom. We think about where the money could have been spent -- the $60 million the Mittals spent on their wedding could have bought years supply of lifesaving antiretroviral drugs for the sick or could have fed millions of needy individuals --and shudder. The rich, many of us think, just have way too much money for their own good.

But the truth is, when it comes to spending for our weddings, the only difference between the billionaires and ordinary couples is how much money they have at their disposal. As a survey conducted by a credit card company showed for example, two-thirds of American couples spent too much for their wedding. This implies that just like those in the uppermost tip of the earnings percentile, many of us would like to have handwritten invitations and pearl-encrusted gowns, we just cant afford them.
